Line 5 external inspections

Expert divers and Remote Operating Vehicles (ROVs) inspect the pipelines under the Straits of Mackinac twice as often as federal regulations require.

ROV inspections were performed in 2012 and 2014, and will be done again in 2016.

Enbridge, through a partnership with Michigan Technological University's Great Lakes Research Center, is also testing and enhancing an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), which maps the bottom of the Straits near the Line 5 crossing using sonar imaging. With four survey missions a year, the AUV provides a thorough, detailed look at the exterior of the pipe and its immediate environment.
