Enbridge utilized a variety of techniques during winter cleanup operations along the Talmadge Creek and Kalamazoo River. Winter operations allowed crews to access wetland and bank areas where frozen conditions provided for better access in sensitive areas.

More than 500 turtles were housed over the 2010-2011 winter, waiting for release when the water in the river reached the correct water temperature in the spring of 2011.

Following Enbridge's 2010 Marshall, Michigan spill, the U.S. EPA and Michigan Department of Environmental Quality closed sections of the Kalamazoo River. On June 21, 2012, the river was returned to its people.

The first section opened today from the access site near Perrin Dam (Marshall Public Works building) to Saylor’s Landing. Saylor’s Landing is one of five new public river access sites that Enbridge has built for the community. It is located at 15 Mile Road and the Kalamazoo River, just west of Marshall.

During the winter and early spring, Enbridge completed the remediation of a number of smaller Kalamazoo River overbank sites as well as the affected areas along Talmadge Creek. A spring reassessment of the river overbanks, under the direction of the U.S. EPA, is nearly complete.

Enbridge is continuing cleanup operations along the stretch of the Kalamazoo River affected by last year’s oil spill. Recovery efforts are taking place both on the river and on the river banks.

Reassessment of all potentially affected portions of Talmadge Creek, the Kalamazoo River and overbank areas is complete. A summer 2011 cleanup plan is being implemented that targets areas where residual oil was found. The first phase of residual oil removal has already begun.

A reassessment of all potentially affected portions of Talmadge Creek, the Kalamazoo River and overbank areas is winding down, and we have begun to remove oil based on the results. These results, along with other data, will be used to guide future efforts and aid local health officials in determining when the river may reopen for recreational use.

Wildlife Update

Tiny turtle

Some turtles did not meet the medical requirements for release prior to their hibernation period in fall 2010. These turtles were overwintered at the Wildlife Response Center. As of April 1, some 240 eggs have been laid at the Wildlife Response Center. Eleven have hatched, and six more are hatching.

With primary cleanup completed and awaiting EPA approval, focus turns to locations where submerged oil has been found. The processes for removing this oil varies from dredging, aeration or raking. A Submerged Oil Task Force determined the most appropriate process for each area. View Photos

As of Sept. 27, Enbridge has submitted all documentation to the EPA for review for primary cleanup of the Kalamazoo River. This is part of the five-step approval process set up for evaluating and inspecting shoreline and overbank cleanup to meet EPA criteria along individual quarter-mile sections of the river.

As Enbridge continues the cleanup of Talmadge Creek and the Kalamazoo River, the focus of oil removal operations has shifted to scraping soil and cleaning oil-stained vegetation. This part of cleanup is critical to allowing the creek environment to begin to heal and regrow.

Wildlife Release

The first rehabilitated birds affected by the oil spill were released August 11 at the W.K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary in Augusta, Michigan. Seven mallard ducks and 11 Canada geese were returned to the wild after being admitted to the Wildlife Response Center for cleaning and medical care.
